Peergos, supported by EU - Next Generation Internet
We are proud to announce that Peergos has been awarded a €200,000 grant by the Next Generation Internet Program for Open Internet Renovation (NGI-POINTER). We are incredibly excited to have been identified as NGI Architects and selected for the program, as it is both ambitious in scope and aligned with our values. We will be using this opportunity to develop new and exciting features for Peergos that will see it evolve into a privacy-focused, decentralized social network.
NGI-POINTER aims to find ambitious "NGI architects" to change the underlying fabric of the internet and the web. It does so by supporting promising bottom-up projects that are able to build, on top of state-of-the-art research, scalable protocols and tools to assist in the practical transition or migration to new or updated technologies, whilst keeping European Values at the core.
NGI-POINTER is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 initiative which is designed to stimulate innovation and economic growth. We strongly believe in the fundamental values that the EU stands for: respect for human dignity and human rights, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law. In fact, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights explicitly mentions the protection of personal data and the right to privacy.
We've previously received support from Protocol Labs and through the Oxford Foundry accelerator program which has enabled us to work on particular aspects of Peergos and grow as a company. Up until now we have been reliant on time and work volunteered by our core team, so a grant of this size represents a step change for us. At least two of our core team members will now be able to work full-time on Peergos.
The NGI-POINTER program will run for a year, so we have a lot of work to do in a short space of time. Alongside this project, we will continue towards our goal of becoming a bootstrapped business by offering subscription plans for private and secure storage, hosted by us! We think this is the best way to keep our incentives aligned with those of the Peergos community.
